Professors Kathleen Lugosch, Joseph Krupczynski, and Max Page have established the new non-profit corporation: Center for Design Engagement.
The Center is dedicated to bringing progressive architectural design, ideas and services to communities and community-based organizations in Massachusetts underserved by the architectural community. The Center cultivates and supports community-based design projects, links academic research with community needs, and advocates for innovative architectural solutions to contemporary design problems in Massachusetts cities and towns.
Projects are realized primarily through two processes. The first involves pro-bono design work coordinated through architecture courses taught by CDE members at UMass Amherst. These courses provide educational opportunities for students, offer expertise to local communities in need of design assistance, and can lead to the development of new concepts and design solutions. The second involves fee-based design research and consulting that provides for small stipends for faculty and graduate research assistants at UMass Amherst. Fee-based research allows a more thorough examination of community based needs and detailed applied research.
CDE is currently sponsoring the Henry Street Duplex project by Professor Kathleen Lugosch and Lugosch Architect, Inc. as well as works by Professor Joseph Krupscynski. The corporation was established with the very generous help of: Scott W. Foster, Esq., Bulkley, Richardson and Gelinas, LLP. |
